WSU Scholar in Residence

Western Sydney University (WSU) is the Foundation University Partner of Powerhouse Parramatta, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to developing the next generation of Australian innovators, scientists and entrepreneurs.

As part of this significant partnership, WSU will embed researchers at Powerhouse to create joint research opportunities with Powerhouse curators through the annual WSU Scholar in Residence program.

KEY DATES

  • Proposed start date February 2025

Application Process

Applicants will propose a research project to be undertaken during the residency term which will contribute to programming at Powerhouse Parramatta.

Research areas:

  • Public AI
  • Water, power and/or energy
  • Food production
  • Choose your own.

Applicants must:

  • Be a staff member of Western Sydney University
  • Have a track record of successful research outcomes
  • Demonstrate the timeliness of this opportunity for their career
  • Meaningfully engage with Powerhouse research and collections
  • Propose a research project that will be visible to and engage with the public and the communities of Powerhouse and WSU.

In your application please include:

  • Title of your research project
  • Select up to 5 objects from the collection that will form the basis of your research
  • A short summary of your project
  • Project summary referencing a collection object(s)
  • The proposed outcomes of your research and how will they benefit Powerhouse
  • Proof of in-principal approval from your Head of School, Centre or Institute to undertake the residency
  • A two-page CV and/or bio
  • Up to 5 examples of recent work.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview. Please see the Information Booklet for more details on the interview process.

Current WSU Scholar in Residence

DR ALISON BARNES

Dr Barnes is Senior Lecturer, Design, Western Sydney University. She is researching the Powerhouse collection of branded food labels to show how food’s graphic heritage ‘speaks’ differently to diverse communities and builds a sense of belonging and identity. Her exploration seeks to enable an understanding of the relationship with, and importance of, Australian and overseas brands, connecting with Powerhouse interests in food, migration and social history.
