5–9pm
FreeBookings essential All ages
Matariki is an all ages program.
This event is weather-dependent. Ticket holders will be informed of any program changes due to wet weather conditions.
As this is an outdoor event, we recommend weather-appropriate clothing for your comfort.
With limited capacity and seating available, guests are encouraged to bring a picnic blanket for seating under the night sky.
Celebrate Matariki rising at Sydney Observatory with a mid-winter program inspired by Te Mātahi o te Tau, the Māori New Year.
Matariki, the Māori name for the star cluster also known as Pleiades, rises every midwinter, heralding a time of remembrance, celebration and renewal.
Start your Matariki journey online by sharing the names of loved ones lost since the stars last rose and expressing your intentions for the coming year. Your heartfelt contributions will be included in the beautiful Speaking the Stars ritual, featuring projections with your messages against stunning panoramas of the night sky from Dark Sky Project, vocalised by artist Jamaica Moana on the night.
