The Mall
A civic space born from utopian visions, the mall is where shopping and public life converge. The Mall is a design, research and curatorial partnership with acclaimed architecture, design and research studio OMA*AMO.
The exhibition takes Western Sydney’s pivotal role in leading a global model of large-scale, transport-integrated retail as a catalyst for exploring the social and cultural phenomena of shopping malls. People, product and capital appear to flow effortlessly through these climate-controlled spaces, their movement carefully shaped by economics, architecture, design and technology.
Spanning 2 storeys, The Mall unfolds across 5 distinct architectural volumes: Arcade, Desire, Transaction, Ideal City and Forum. An uncanny world, at once familiar and constructed, the exhibition considers how malls absorb and influence lifestyle, technology and consumer culture.
Retail innovations across architecture, design, technology, engineering and fashion are on display throughout the exhibition while new commissions by Australian and international designers, architects and artists question the legacies of malls, revealing the effects of consumption, the afterlives of retail development and the utopian imaginaries that continue to shape commercial spaces.
Ubiquitous yet understudied, shopping malls are deeply embedded in our collective urban memory. The Mall traces the shifting rituals of retail, from the 19-century arcade to AI-driven commercial systems; inviting audiences to browse, linger and participate in a vivid portrait of a building type that continues to shape contemporary life.
