OCEAN WE'VE | Workshops
Join Pacific weavers across Western Sydney this summer to create 80 handmade woven mats that will be used to celebrate the opening of Powerhouse Parramatta.
The project forms part of the OCEAN WE’VE Commission, a new Powerhouse and Blacktown Arts project bringing together Western Sydney’s Pacific communities through a large-scale collaborative weaving project.
Over a series of free workshops from November to March across Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre, Campbelltown Arts Centre and at Waitangi Day celebrations in Blacktown, you will learn the traditional art of pandanus leaf mat weaving with skilled Pacific artists. The completed mats will be presented at the opening of Powerhouse Parramatta and a selection will also be acquired into the Powerhouse Collection.
OCEAN WE'VE Weavers brings together master weavers from across the Pacific including Langafonua ‘a Fafine Tonga, Women’s Council of Tonga in Nuku’alofa, Ereamone Chamberlain, Sione Falemaka, Angela Paikea, Keren Ruki and Seve Faleupolu.
