Sampai, Tak Sampai (to arrive, not to arrive) is a live performance installation by artist Jumaadi and sound designer/composer Michael Toisuta. Developed between Indonesia and Australia, the work explores migration, displacement and the environment, originally inspired by the Javanese tradition of boyongan where entire communities carry belongings – sometimes whole houses – during relocation.

Sampai, Tak Sampai occupies the space between installation and performance, resisting easy categorisation. Images, objects, bodies, shadows and sound are assembled and transformed before the audience in an act of making.

Across the day, the artists respond to the space, its objects and one another, as the work continually comes into being. Return at another time and the world may have changed: new images emerge, new sounds are heard and new relationships between the works take shape.

Ticketed performances happen throughout the day and patrons are welcome to experience the free installation outside of performance times.
