Notes

This 1-day workshop is designed for learners aged 12–15.

Explore the opening of Powerhouse Parramatta through an engineering lens, developing an understanding of engineering principles and practice through objects, technologies and architectural features across the building and opening exhibitions.

Inspired by the building’s iconic steel exoskeleton, learners will investigate the relationship between structure, materials and design, examining how engineering principles are applied in architecture and the built environment.

Through hands-on experimentation, observation, drawing and prototyping, learners will investigate forces, loads, material properties, stability and structural behaviour. Working collaboratively, they will use principles of structural engineering and design thinking to develop, test and refine solutions, considering how factors such as strength, efficiency, functionality and material selection influence the design process.

Generously supported by the Sir William Tyree Foundation.
