MPavilion 9 Chair Commission winners Sam Tomkins and Iain (Max) Maxwell discuss their design process from conception to production with Powerhouse assistant curator Dr Tuan Nguyen.

Made of 3D-printed, recyclable polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) plastic using robotic 3D printing technology, the MPavilion 9 ‘Re-pete’ Chair is a luminous object embodying sustainable design principles. The design accompanied the billowing, cellular MPavilion structure by Bangkok-based studio all(zone) and will be displayed alongside the recent Powerhouse acquisition of MPavilion 1–10 Chair Commissions.

An initiative of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, MPavilion has commissioned an outstanding architect and designer annually since 2014 to create a temporary structure and seating for Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Gardens. The structure becomes the focal point for talks, performances, workshops and informal gatherings.

Tomkins, Maxwell and Ennis Butler are members of an interdisciplinary team of design-based researchers from the Faculty of Arts and Design at the University of Canberra.
